Etymology of Albes

What does the name Albes mean?

Latin word Albanus, which means white. Albes was originally a name from the many places in Italy and elsewhere called Alba. The nickname was usually given to someone who was fair in complexion or blond haired. The name originated in Alsace, where the Albes family played an integral part in the social, economic and political development of the region. In medieval times, when land proprietorship and management were the sole source of wealth and power, the Albes family became members of the gentry.

The family branched into several houses, all of which played an important role in the local political conflicts which forged the nation. Hundreds of thousands of Europeans, including many Rhinelanders, made the voyage to North America between the 17th and 20th centuries. It was an escape from religious persecution and poverty and also an opportunity for people to start over and own their own land. Most landed at Ellis Island, off New York before moving on to the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Illinois, and California. Some also landed in Canada and settled in Ontario, while others headed west to the prairie provinces.
