Early Origins of the Yetton family

The surname Yetton was first found in the West Riding of Yorkshire at Yeadon, now a town within the City of Leeds metropolitan borough. 1 2 The town dates back to the Domesday Book when it was listed as Iadun and probably meant "steep hill," from the Old English words gaeh + dun. 3 Alternatively, the name could have been derived from Yeaton, a small village in Shropshire which also dates back to the Domesday Book. In this latter case, the village was first listed as Aiton and probably meant "farmstead by a river." 3

The first record of the family was found in Yorkshire where the Pipe Rolls list Walter de Yeadon during the reign of Richard I (1189-1199.) Later, John of Yedon was listed in the Feet of Fines for Yorkshire in 1226. 4

The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 includes entries for John de Yedon; and Robert de Yedona, both in Yorkshire. 1
