The surname Verburckt was first found in Holland, where the name became noted for its many branches in the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the region. The name was first recorded in Delft, a town in the province of South Holland. It received its charter from Prince William II of the Netherlands in 1246. In 1536 it was almost totally destroyed by fire. It became the residence of the Counts of Orange. The Old Church, originally built in the 11th century, was rebuilt in 1476. It is most famous for its beautiful porcelain. It did not survive the French occupation at the end of 18th century. Hence, New Delft. In their later history the surname became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into this most influential family.
