Early Origins of the Treggian family

The surname Treggian was first found in Cornwall where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor of Wolfedon. "The manor of Carvolghe or Carvaghe in [the parish of Morvah, Cornwall] and St. Ives, was in the family of Tregian, until the days of Elizabeth ; when on the confiscation of Francis Tregian's property, it was barbarously seized by the crown, and granted to Lord Hunsdon. It was afterwards re-purchased by the Tregian family, and finally sold to Mr. Grosse." 1

The same source notes another passage about the family: "The Tregians, though established here in wealth and splendour, were soon, however, compelled to feel a dreadful reverse of fortune, and painfully to witness the instability of all earthly greatness. In the year 1577, Francis Tregian of Golden, being then only twenty-eight years of age, was charged with the crime of harbouring Cuthbert Mayne, a Romish priest; and being found guilty of recusancy, was seized, immured in a prison, had all his estates seized, and found himself with his family hurled in wan instant from affluence to beggary." 1
