The Trapani surname is a habitational name, taken on from the name of the city of Trapani, in western Sicily.

Albert of Trapani (born Albert degli Abati) (c. 1240-1307) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest and a professed member of the Carmelites. He was known for working and maintaining a positive relationship with Jews as well as for his powers of healing. Hew was also attributed for the 1301 lifting of the siege in Messina that could have seen hundreds die from starvation.

Early Origins of the Trapani family

The surname Trapani was first found in Palermo (Sicilian: Palermu, Latin: Panormus), a city in Insular Italy, the capital of both the region of Sicily and the Province of Palermo at the foot of Mount Pellegrino. Originally a Phoenician colony in the 3rd century B.C., Palermo was later held by Carthage and then the Saracens, in 835. The Normans were in the region from 1050; the region flourished and many ancient ruins exist from that time period, including two city gates. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.
