Early Origins of the Tedlingham family

The surname Tedlingham was first found in Buckinghamshire. The family claim descendancy from a tenant of the lands of Tyringham, held by Ansketel, a Norman Baron of Tebotevilla in Normandy, under-tenant of the Bishop of Coutance who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. At that time, it was listed as Tellingham but by 1130, the name was changed to Tringeham. The place name literally means "homestead of river-meadow of the family or followers of a man called Tira." 1 Today Tyringham is a small village in the Borough of Milton Keynes and has a population of roughly 190 people. Tyringham Hall, is a grade I listed stately home in the same area, but ownership of this manor house was not related to the family.
