Distinguished members of the family include Anthony Stapley (1590-1655), one of the regicides of King Charles I of England. He was the son of Anthony Stapley of Framfield, Sussex, by his third wife, Ann. The Stapley family moved about 1615 from Framfield to Patcham. Stapley was one of the judges of Charles I.
