Early Origins of the Sommerfelder family

The surname Sommerfelder was first found in Silesia, where the name, belonging to one of the oldest classes of Silesian nobles, was associated with the tribal conflicts of the area since 1294. They declared allegiances to many nobles and princes of early history, lending their influence in struggles for power and status within the region. They branched into many houses, and their contributions were sought by many leaders in their search for power. In 1294 they gave their name to a castle and a village near Crossen. The family had their seat in 1541 at Drewitz, in 1545 at Temnitz near Frankenstein, and 1785 in Jacobsdorf.
