Literally the place name means "muddy settlement of the family or followers of a man called Haefer," having derived from the Old English "cwead" + the Old English personal name + "-ingas." 3 The surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Quadring, held by the under-tenant of Count Alan of Brittany. 2
