Early Notables of the Phillpotts family

Outstanding amongst the family at this time was John Philpot (1516-1555), English prelate, Archdeacon of Winchester, third son of Sir Peter Philpot, born at Compton, Hampshire; Sir John Phillpott (1589-1645), Somerset herald, son of Henry Philpot and his wife. The Journal of the House of Lords, Volume 3: 20 May 1624 states that "Sir John Phillpott, Knight, is certified to be a Captain of a Foot Company in Hampshire; and that he and his Wife and his Children are Papists." Migration of the Phillpotts family

To escape the uncertainty of the political and religious uncertainty found in England, many English families boarded ships at great expense to sail for the colonies held by Britain. The passages were expensive, though, and the boats were unsafe, overcrowded, and ridden with disease. Those who were hardy and lucky enough to make the passage intact were rewarded with land, opportunity, and social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families went on to be important contributors to the young nations of Canada and the United States where they settled. Phillpottss were some of the first of the immigrants to arrive in North America: Henry Philpot settled in Virginia in 1607; Phillip and John Philpott, who arrived in Barbados in 1634; Margaret Phillpot who settled in Virginia in 1654 with her husband.
