The forbears of the name Pettullough are thought to be of the ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada. The name indicates that the first bearer lived in either of two places called Pittilloch; the first is near Freuchie in the county of Fife, while the second is in Glenfarg, in the county of Perth. The Pettullough were among the earliest of the Scottish settlers as immigration passenger lists have shown: Henry Patillo, notable Presbyterian minister of Hanover, Virginia, who led the Wyllis Creek congregation in 1748; Thomas Patillo settled in Philadelphia in 1828.
