The sea-swept Hebrides islands and the west coast of Scotland are the ancestral home of the Pangan family. Their name comes from the personal name Payne. Pangan is a patronymic surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Although this interpretation of the etymology of the surname Pangan is uncertain, it is generally accepted at the present time.

Pangan Early Origins

The surname Pangan was first found in Yorkshire, where they held a family seat from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.

The Great Migration

Many of the ancestors of Dalriadan families who arrived in North America still live in communities along the east coast of Canada and the United States. In the American War of Independence many of the original settlers traveled north to Canada as United Empire Loyalists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the ancestors of many Scots began recovering their collective national heritage through Clan societies, highland games, and other patriotic events. Research into the origins of individual families in North America revealed records of the immigration of a number of people bearing the name Pangan or a variant listed above: James Pagan, who came to Virginia in 1688; Robert Pagan, who arrived in Maine in 1748; Thomas Pagan, who arrived in St. John, N.B. in 1800; William Pagan, who came to New York in 1766.
