When the ancestors of the Mulett family emigrated to England following the Norman Conquest in 1066 they brought their family name with them. They lived in Buckinghamshire. The name, however, is reference to the family's place of residence prior to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, Miall, Normandy. Alternatively, the name could have been a "metonymic occupational name for a grower or seller of millet or panic grass, from the Old French word 'milium' " 1 Early Origins of the Mulett familyThe surname Mulett was first found in various counties and shires throughout Britain as seen in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273: Roger Millot in Nottinghamshire; and John Milot in Huntingdonshire. The Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 lists: Willelmus Melot; Johannes Millot; Matilda Millot; and Rogerus Millotson. 2 The History and Antiquities of North Durham, by Rev. James Raine in 1852 lists the following family in Durham: John Mylote in 1380; William Melot in 1433; and Robert Millot in 1512. Migration of the Mulett familyTo escape the uncertainty of the political and religious uncertainty found in England, many English families boarded ships at great expense to sail for the colonies held by Britain. The passages were expensive, though, and the boats were unsafe, overcrowded, and ridden with disease. Those who were hardy and lucky enough to make the passage intact were rewarded with land, opportunity, and social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families went on to be important contributors to the young nations of Canada and the United States where they settled. Muletts were some of the first of the immigrants to arrive in North America: Francis Millet, who arrived in Virginia in 1623; Richard Millet, who came to Boston in 1630; Thomas Millet and his wife Maria, who settled in New England in 1635.
