Early Origins of the Mogle family

The surname Mogle was first found in Lancashire where the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Maghull, held by Roger de Poitou, a Norman Baron who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. "The family of Maghull, which derived its name from this place, were for many ages connected with it." [1] Today Maghull is a town and civil parish in Sefton, Merseyside.

One of the first records of the family was found in the parish of Aintree. "William of Aintree, in the reign of Henry III., left a daughter and heiress, Alice, who married into the Maghull family; and an heiress of the latter, Joanna, married into the family of Molyneux, who thus became proprietors of this place." United States Mogle migration to the United States +

The unstable environment in England at this time caused numerous families to board ships and leave in search of opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad in places like Ireland, Australia, and particularly the New World. The voyage was extremely difficult, however, and only taken at great expense. The cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels caused many to arrive diseased and starving, not to mention destitute from the enormous cost. Still opportunity in the emerging nations of Canada and the United States was far greater than at home and many went on to make important contributions to the cultures of their adopted countries. An examination of many early immigration records reveals that people bearing the name Mogle arrived in North America very early:

  • Valentine Mogle, who landed in Pennsylvania in 1761 [2]
Mogle Settlers in United States in the 19th Century
  • Karl Mogle, who arrived in Texas in 1850-1906 [2]
