The surname McCurlie was first found in Ayrshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Inbhir Àir), formerly a county in the southwestern Strathclyde region of Scotland, that today makes up the Council Areas of South, East, and North Ayrshire, where they held a family seat since the year 1095, when Lochlan MacCairlill, the royal heir apparent to the throne of Ulster was defeated in a great battle at Ardagh in the county of Antrim and had to flee. He settled in Ayrshire in Scotland with his clan.
