Early Origins of the MacNicholas family
The surname MacNicholas was first found in County Mayo (Irish: Maigh Eo) located on the West coast of the Republic of Ireland in the province of Connacht, where bearers of the name were descended from a branch of the Norman de Burgos. The de Burgos came to Ireland in the 12th century, and became better known as the Burkes or Bourkes. As landholders in County Mayo, one branch of the family became Gaelicized and took on the name Mac Nioclais.
