The surname Lyne was a topographic name derived from the Old English "lind," which meant "lime tree." Alternatively, the name could have been a shortened version of female first names such as Cateline, Emmeline, and Adeline which all contain the suffix "line". Finally, the name could have been a derivative of the word/surname "lane," but we feel that this later scenario is unlikely.

Early Origins of the Lyne family

The surname Lyne was first found in Oxfordshire where the earliest records of the name include a record of Lina in the Pipe Rolls of Oxfordshire in 1181. It was quite common for names not to include a personal name at that time. Later records show William Thomas Lyne in the 1296 Subsidy Rolls of Sussex; and Reginal Lynes in the Assize Rolls of Cornwall of 1340. Yorkshire was the home to many of the family as the Yorkshire Poll Tax Records to 1379, include: Thomas in ye Lyen; Willelmus in ye Lyne; and Johannes del Lyen. Interestingly, years later in 1582, records show "William Lyne, sonne of John Kyne, he died of ye plague, yers 29: St. Peter, Cornhill."

West Indies Lyne migration to West Indies +

The British first settled the British West Indies around 1604. They made many attempts but failed in some to establish settlements on the Islands including Saint Lucia and Grenada. By 1627 they had managed to establish settlements on St. Kitts (St. Christopher) and Barbados, but by 1641 the Spanish had moved in and destroyed some of these including those at Providence Island. The British continued to expand the settlements including setting the First Federation in the British West Indies by 1674; some of the islands include Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Island, Turks and Caicos, Jamaica and Belize then known as British Honduras. By the 1960's many of the islands became independent after the West Indies Federation which existed from 1958 to 1962 failed due to internal political conflicts. After this a number of Eastern Caribbean islands formed a free association. 4
