Early Origins of the Liddington family

The surname Liddington was first found in Rutland at Liddington, a parish, in the union of Uppingham, hundred of Wrandike. 1 This ancient Saxon village dates back to 940 when it was first known as Lidentune. By the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, the parish was known as Ledenstone 2 and literally meant "farmstead on the noisy stream," from the Old English words "hylde" + "tun." 3

There is another Liddington in Wiltshire, but this parish is much more recent, but "on Beacon Hill was a large circular work, called Liddington Castle." 1 The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 list Tenentes Lidinton in Rutland. The same rolls listed Fulco de Lydinton in Oxfordshire.

Kirby's Quest listed Thomas de Ledintone in Somerset temp. 1 Edward III. 4 Robert de Liddinton was found in Oxfordshire, temp. Henry III-Edward I. 5 Also in Oxfordshire, Robert de Lidinton was listed there in the Pipe Rolls of 1204. Henry de Lidi'gtun was listed in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire in 1230. A few years later, William de Lydyngton was found in Yorkshire in 1300. 6
