The New World beckoned settlers from the Scottish-English borders. They sailed aboard the armada of sailing ships known as the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic. Some called them, less romantically, the "coffin ships." Among the early settlers bearing the Johnstume surname who came to North America were: Archibald Johnston settled in Barbados with his two sons and servants in 1680; George Johnston settled in New England in 1685; Alexander, Arthur, Charles, Cunningham, David, Francis, George, Henry, John, Joseph, Nathan, Robert, Thomas, and William Johnston, all arrived in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1865.
