Today's generation of the Igulendint family bears a name that was brought to England by the migration wave that was started by the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Igulendint family lived in Cambridgeshire, at Ickleton, parish, in the union of Linton, hundred of Whittlesford. "This place was the seat of a Benedictine nunnery, founded in the reign of Henry II. The church, supposed to have been built before the Conquest, contains 400 sittings." 1 2

The surname Igulendint was first found in Cambridgeshire where they were conjecturally descended from Hardwin of Scales, a Norman knight who held the mamor of Ickleton from Count Eustace. 4

The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 included Robert de Incledene in Devon at that time. 5 Richard Igolynden and John Igulden were listed as holding lands in 1475 and 1536. 3

Migration of the Igulendint family

The unstable environment in England at this time caused numerous families to board ships and leave in search of opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad in places like Ireland, Australia, and particularly the New World. The voyage was extremely difficult, however, and only taken at great expense. The cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels caused many to arrive diseased and starving, not to mention destitute from the enormous cost. Still opportunity in the emerging nations of Canada and the United States was far greater than at home and many went on to make important contributions to the cultures of their adopted countries. An examination of many early immigration records reveals that people bearing the name Igulendint arrived in North America very early: Elizabeth, Jane, John, and Sarah Iggleden who settled in Massachusetts in 1634.
