The French name Huin first arose during the Medieval period in Normandy. The family was first found in the village of Luot, located in the Manche department of Normandy. 1

Early Origins of the Huin family

The surname Huin was first found in Normandy (French: Normandie), the former Duchy of Normandy, where the family was anciently seated in Huest, a village in the department of Eure in the district of Evreux, and in Luot, a village of the department of Manche in the district of Avranches. 1

Some members of this family distinguished themselves. Alain Huon, the lord of Kéramédan, who stemmed from the house of Huon de Lanover, was part of the reformations from 1418 to 1481. Maurice Huon took an oath to the duke in Tréguier in 1437. Their son, René, was a squire and the lord of Kéramédan. The branch Huon de Kermadec, known since the 13th century, was part of the reformations of 1426 and 1534. Pierre Daniel Huet, a prelate and scholar, was born in Caen in 1630 and died in Paris i 1721. Antoine Huet d'Ambrun was a squire and the lord of Ambrun. He married Catherine Le Roux in 1672. 2

Mathurin Huot, born in 1646, son of René and Renée (née Fortier), settled in Canada in the 17th century. After settling in Quebec he married Marie Dutertre, daughter of René and Louise (née Goulet), at Ange-Gardien, Quebec on 25th November 1671. 3

Migration of the Huin family

France was active as a cultural leader in the early 16th century. One particular area in which they lead was the exploration of the New World. The explorers, like Jacques Cartier in 1534, led the way to North America. Champlain, in 1608, made the first of twenty voyages to France to attract settlers and brought the first migrant in 1617. By 1675, there were 7000 French in Quebec, and the French Acadian presence in the Maritimes had reached 500. The French founded Lower Canada, thus becoming one of the two great founding nations of Canada. The family name Huin has made many distinguished contributions in France and New France to the world of science, culture, religion, and education.
