Early Origins of the Huckins family

The surname Huckins was first found in the Domesday Book of 1086 where Hugens was listed as a surname and Hugh, Hugo and Hugolin were listed as personal names. 1

Like its Scottish counterpart, the name is a diminutive of "Hugh" as in "son of Hugh." 2 This in turn, translates in Latin to "Hugo." 3

Somerset with its rolling hills and flat plains in South West England is where we find the first entry for the surname in its Latin form: Reginaldus filius Hugin. At about the same time in Huntingdonshire, the first entry as a personal name was found: Hugun filius Ricardi c. 1250. Hugyn (with no first name) was recorded in the Assize Rolls of Lancashire in 1246 and John Hugyn was entered in the Subsidy Rolls for Sussex in 1327, and later again in the Feet of Fines for Staffordshire in 1337. 4

Back in Somerset, Richards Hugons was listed there in the Subsidy Rolls of 1327. In Worcestershire, William Hugyns and Amisia Hugines were both listed in the Subsidy Rolls for 1327. 4

The Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 included: Willelmus Hugune, Hugo Hugune et Alicia uxor ejus, and Ricardus Hugune et Petronilla uxor ejus. 5
