In ancient Scotland, the ancestors of the Hendrix family were part of a tribe called the Picts. The name Hendrix is derived from the personal name "Henry" or from "Hendric, an ancient personal name." 1

"Modern immigration has added Hendriks and Henriques to the London Directory, but Hendrick and Hendricks represent a much earlier importation from the Low Countries. The 'd' is intrusive, as in our own Hendry for Henry. 2

Early Origins of the Hendrix family

The surname Hendrix was first found in Staffordshire where Hendricus was listed in The Kalendar of Abbot Samson of Bury St Edmunds in 1188. A few years later Hendricus Prid was listed in Yorkshire in 1212. In Essex early records revealed Alice as daughter of Henry de Sanford who bore the seal of S. Alis. Filia Hendrici in the 13th century. 3

The Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 lists: John Hendrich in Cambridgeshire; and William Heneriche in Oxfordshire. Spelling variations were common for this family as the Visitation of London, 1633 shows John Henricks, son of Henry Henrix, of Antwerpe, in Brabant, temp. 1600. 2

Hendrix Spelling Variations

The appearance of the printing press and the first dictionaries in the last few hundred years did much to standardize spelling. Prior to that time scribes spelled according to sound, a practice that resulted in many spelling variations. Hendrix has been spelled Henricks, Hendrick, Hendricks, Hendrix, Hendryx and others.

The expense of the crossing to the North American colonies seemed small beside the difficulties of remaining in Scotland. It was a long and hard trip, but at its end lay the reward of freedom. Some Scots remained faithful to England and called themselves United Empire Loyalists, while others fought in the American War of Independence. Much of this lost Scottish heritage has been recovered in the last century through Clan societies and other patriotic Scottish organizations.
