Heffron History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

North America accepted thousands of Irish immigrants during the 19th century as their homeland suffered under foreign imperialistic rule. Although settlers from the early portion of the century came to North America by choice in search of land, by far the largest influx of Irish immigrants came to North America during the Great Potato Famine of the late 1840s. Many of these Irish families left the country destitute and in some cases suffering from disease. However, those who survived the long ocean voyage were especially vital to the development of industry in the United States and what would become known as Canada. Research of immigration and passenger lists has shown many early immigrants bearing the name Heffron:

• Mrs. Mary Heffron, aged 27 who immigrated to Canada, arriving at the Grosse Isle Quarantine Station in Quebec aboard the ship "Rose" departing from the port of Liverpool, England but died on Grosse Isle In July 1847 2

• Patrick Richard Heffron (1860-1927), American clergyman, the 2nd Roman Catholic Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Winona, Minnesota
• Richard T. Heffron (1930-2007), American Hugo Award nominated film and television director, known for his work on The Rockford Files (1974), Futureworld (1976) and I Will Fight No More Forever (1975)
• John Heffron, American stand-up comic from Detroit
• Edward James Heffron (1923-2013), American private with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army during World War II, he was portrayed in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers
