Early Origins of the Hamel family

The surname Hamel was first found in south Tyrone an d neighboring Oriel, where they were a branch of the Cenél Eoghain, families descended from Conall Gulban, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. From the 12th century on, they were well known as poets and ollavs to the O'Hanlons. They were also known for their prowess in battle, Donnell O'Hammoyle was one of the adherents of Rory O'Donnell at the end of the 16th century.
