Dalriada, in ancient Scotland, is where the name Egleshan evolved. It was a name for someone who lived in the old Barony of Eaglesham in the county of Renfrew (now part of the Strathclyde region), Scotland. Here we find the following early entries: "Dominus Robertus de Heiglssam, chaplain, who witnessed a confirmation by Alexander filius Walteri of his father's gifts to the church of Paisley in 1239. Barthelmeu de Egglesham, chapeleyn, was warden of the New Place of Seneware (Sanquhar) in the county of Dunfres in 1296. They are particularly common in Canada, since many went north as United Empire Loyalists at the time of the American War of Independence. Much later, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the highland games and Clan societies that now dot North America sprang up, allowing many Scots to recover their lost national heritage. Some of the first immigrants to cross the Atlantic and come to North America bore the name Egleshan, or a variant listed above: Mr. Eagleson landed in Boston Massachusetts in 1768.
