The ancestors of the name Egleghan come from the ancient Scottish tribe known as the Dalriadans. They lived along the rugged west coast of Scotland and on the Hebrides islands and used the name to indicate a person who lived in the old Barony of Eaglesham in the county of Renfrew (now part of the Strathclyde region), Scotland. Here we find the following early entries: "Dominus Robertus de Heiglssam, chaplain, who witnessed a confirmation by Alexander filius Walteri of his father's gifts to the church of Paisley in 1239. Barthelmeu de Egglesham, chapeleyn, was warden of the New Place of Seneware (Sanquhar) in the county of Dunfres in 1296.
