The surname Corfull was first found in Shropshire where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, having prevailed over King Harold, granted most of Britain to his many victorious Barons. Hence, conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the village and lands of Corfham of the river Corve, held by Earl Roger, a Norman Baron, who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. The holding later became known as Corfield or Corfhull. Corfe Castle is a ruinous castle in the village and civil parish named Corfe Castle, Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates back to the 11th century and is today protected as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
