It was rendered in the Domesday Book as Cotingeley, so the name of the now vanished town was probably Cotingley, but scholars disagree on this. The place-name is derived from two sources; Coting was an old English personal name, and ley was a suffix that meant field or meadow. The name as a whole meant "Coting's field."
