The surname Corbo comes from the Italian word "corvo," from the Latin "corvus," meaning "raven." The name is thought to have originally been a nickname for someone thought to resemble the bird in some way.

Early Origins of the Corbo family

The surname Corbo was first found in Abruzzi, a region of farming provinces in the Appenines of south central Italy. In ancient times it was part of the Duchy of Spoleto. Under the Normans about 1080 it became part of Apulia, with the capital being that of Sulmona. Later, about 1300, it became part of the Angevin kingdom of Naples. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry. The Corvo family were the barons of Cerviglione and held the castle of Carceri out side Sulmona.
