In their later history the surname became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into a most influential family.

One of the first records of the name was found in Belgium, where Woitini Bongart was recorded at Avelgem in 1281. Jan van den Boeghaerde was listed as a knight in 1398. Claise vanden Boongaerde or Boengart was found in Wervik in 1393. Arnekin Bogart was listed in 1399 and later, Willems van den Boemgarde was recorded in 1418 as Willem van den Bogarde, Knight.
