Bovier is an Anglo-Saxon name. The name was originally given to a herder of oxen. The surname Bovier is derived from the Old French words bovier, bover, and buvier, which all mean ox-herd.

Early Origins of the Bovier family

The surname Bovier was first found in Yorkshire where they held a family seat with estates in that shire. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was represented by Daniel le Buuier in 1191, and again in 1197.

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada.
