Early Origins of the Boulling family

The surname Boulling was first found in Lancashire and Yorkshire. For the Yorkshire branch, the name was thought to have been derived from a local name Bowling, a chapelry near Bradford, but census records are relatively late for this name as the first found was Tristram Bollyng of Bradford c. 1580. The same reference states that his grandson Robert Bollyng was a "sadler and silk trowster" residing in London. To confuse matters more, the name could also have been a baptismal name as "the son of Bolling".

Migration of the Boulling family

To escape oppression and starvation at that time, many English families left for the "open frontiers" of the New World with all its perceived opportunities. In droves people migrated to the many British colonies, those in North America in particular, paying high rates for passages in cramped, unsafe ships. Although many of the settlers did not make the long passage alive, those who did see the shores of North America perceived great opportunities before them. Many of the families that came from England went on to make essential contributions to the emerging nations of Canada and the United States. Research into various historical records revealed some of first members of the Boulling family emigrate to North America: George Bolling who settled in Virginia in 1725; Christian Bolling who settled in Mississippi in 1789; and Fritz Bolling who arrived in New York in 1871..
