 England The name Blissitt is derived from the Middle English word "iblescede", which roughly means "to make sacred," in the sense "happy, fortunate." From 1300 onwards the word occurs as blisced, blissed, a form surviving, no doubt in Blissett, which may also derive from a woman’s name: Blissot atte Pole which appears in the Subsidy Rolls of Somerset in 1327. 1 Early Origins of the Blissitt familyThe surname Blissitt was first found in Oxfordshire where the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 list Hugh de Blesset as hold lands there at that time. Migration of the Blissitt familyThousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Blissitts to arrive in North America: James Blesse, who settled in Virginia in 1637; Thomas Blessed, who came to Maryland in 1670; John Blizard, who came to Virginia in 1767; Joseph Blizard, who came to America in 1767.
