Migration of the Bellforthey family
The New World beckoned settlers from the Scottish-English borders. They sailed aboard the armada of sailing ships known as the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic. Some called them, less romantically, the "coffin ships." Among the early settlers bearing the Bellforthey surname who came to North America were: John Belford who settled in Barbados with his servants in 1680; James Belford settled in West New Jersey in 1771; George and James Belford settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1840.
