The saga of the Batenoch family begins among the people of the ancient tribe of the Picts. They lived in the lands of Badenoch, in Inverness.

Early Origins of the Batenoch family

The surname Batenoch was first found in Inverness-shire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Inbhir Nis) divided between the present day Scottish Council Areas of Highland and Western Isles, and consisting of a large northern mainland area and various island areas off the west coast, the shire was anciently both a Pictish and Norwegian stronghold. The Lord of Badenoch was a magnate who ruled the lordship of Badenoch in the 13th century and early 14th century. It is generally believed that lordship was created out of the territory of the Meic Uilleim, after William Comyn, jure uxoris Earl of Buchan, Justiciar of Scotia and Warden of Moray who defeated Gille Escoib MacUilleim. After the death of John III Comyn, Lord of Badenoch (d. 1306), the lordship was taken into royal hands.

Migration of the Batenoch family

The difficult crossing was an enormous hurdle, but those who survived found freedom and opportunity in ample measure. Some Scots even fought for their freedom in the American War of Independence. This century, their ancestors have become aware of the illustrious history of the Scots in North America and at home through Clan societies and other organizations.
