 England The name Bairsto first arose amongst the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is derived from their having lived in Yorkshire, where they took their name from Bairstow in West Yorkshire. The place-name is derived from the Old English terms beger, for berries, and stow, for grow. It referred to "the place where berries are grown". 1 Early Origins of the Bairsto familyThe surname Bairsto was first found in Yorkshire, where they held a family seat from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 A.D. Alternatively, the Barton variant could have originated at Barston, a parish, in the union of Solihull, Solihull division of the hundred of Hemlingford in Warwickshire. "In Domesday Book it is written Bercestone, the name, it is supposed, of a possessor in the time of the Saxons. Migration of the Bairsto familyAt this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Bairsto arrived in North America very early: George and William Barstow who settled in Massachusetts in 1620; George Barstow settled in Boston, Massachusetts in 1663; William Bairstow arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1872..
