From early on they held estates on the Main river, as well as in Hanau, Nassau, Isenburg, Darmstadt, and Wurzburg. The family was already highly regarded in the year 1246, the year in which the founding father, Friedericus von Babenhausen, died. The ancestral seat of the family is the castle and city Babenhausen in the duchy of Hessen. Two other Hessian villages took on the name Bobenhausen, one in the county of Lissberg and the other in the county Ulrichstein.
