The French name Aubbein first arose during the Medieval period in the region of Brittany. It is derived from when the family having lived in the town of Aubin, in the province of Brittany. Early Origins of the Aubbein familyThe surname Aubbein was first found in Brittany, in the north-western part of France where one can trace their origin to ancient Gaul and it is recorded in the form of Albinus as early as the year 538, in the city of Angers, capital of the former province of Anjou. Members of this distinguished family were particularly involved in the affairs of the community in which they lived and, as a noble family of France, they contributed largely to the political, as well as the cultural, scene of the regions in which they settled throughout the centuries. They were elevated to the nobility and this was confirmed with letters-patent and heraldic cap. The family prospered, expanded and some of them branched to Paris as the name appears in the year 800 in the cartulary of Cormery in Touraine. Michel Aubin, born in 1638, son of Jacques and Jacqueline (née Cornilleau), was a French agriculturalist that travelled from Orne, France to Canada in the 17th century. Migration of the Aubbein familyImmigration to New France was slow; therefore, early marriage was desperately encouraged amongst the immigrants. The fur trade attracted migrants, both noble and commoner. 15,000 explorers left Montreal in the late 17th and 18th centuries. By 1675, there were 7000 French in Quebec. By the same year the Acadian presence in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island had reached 500. In 1755, 10,000 French Acadians refused to take an oath of allegiance to England and were deported to Louisiana. The French founded Lower Canada, thus becoming one of the two great founding nations of Canada. The distinguished family name Aubbein has made significant contributions to the culture, arts, sciences and religion of France and New France. Amongst the settlers in North America with this distinguished name Aubbein were George Aubin, who settled in Philadelphia in 1874; Jacob Auby, who settled in Philadelphia in 1741; Maria Margreta Daubin, who settled in Philadelphia in 1795.
