An ancient Strathclyde-Briton family from the Scottish/English Borderlands were the first to use the name Almiger. They lived in Yorkshire.

Early Origins of the Almiger family

The surname Almiger was first found in Dumfriesshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Dhùn Phris), a Southern area, bordering on England that today forms part of the Dumfries and Galloway Council Area, where this curious name is descended from Robert M'Kawele, Lord of Karsneloughe, who was living in 1370 in Guffok land in Nithsdale. Traditionally within the family name the first Allmack or Allmark was a MacAll who on migrating south to Yorkshire found it more fashionable to drop the Mac from his name to become accepted in the English society. Progressively the name became Allmack, Allmark, Allmoke, Hawmoke. William Allmack, one of the founders of Hong Kong was honored by Almack Place in that city.

For Scottish immigrants, the great expense of travel to North America did not seem such a problem in those unstable times. Acres of land awaited them and many got the chance to fight for their freedom in the American War of Independence. These Scots and their ancestors went on to play important roles in the forging of the great nations of the United States and Canada. Among them: Thomas Allmark who settled in Barbados in 1780.
