Abrams History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Many Scottish families suffered enormous hardships and were compelled to leave their country of birth. They traveled to Ireland and Australia, but mostly to the colonies of North America, where many found the freedom and opportunity they sought. It was not without a fight, though, as many were forced to stand up and defend their freedom in the American War of Independence. The ancestors of these Scots abroad have rediscovered their heritage in the last century through the Clan societies and other organizations that have sprung up across North America. Immigration and passenger ship lists show some important early immigrants bearing the name Abrams:

• Mr. John Abrams, British Convict who was convicted in Norfolk, England for 10 years, transported aboard the "Asia" on 25th April 1840, arriving in Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land) 4
• William Abrams, who arrived in Adelaide, Australia aboard the ship "Brankenmore" in 1846 5

• General Creighton Williams Abrams Jr. (1914-1974), American Commander of forces in Vietnam and two-time winner of the Army Distinguished Service Cross, eponym of the M1 Abrams tank 9
• Leonard Abrams (1954-2023), American journalist and founder of the East Village Eye
• Muhal Richard Abrams (1930-2017), born Richard Lewis Abrams, an American educator, administrator, composer, arranger, clarinetist, cellist, and jazz pianist
• Colonel Abrams (1949-2016), American musician, singer, songwriter, dancer and actor
