The staff is a common symbol of office or authority. The pastoral crosier is one type of staff that is an emblem of a shepherd's watchfulness over his flock. It denotes Episcopal jurisdiction and authority. Another is the palmer's staff that is a symbol of the traveler, borne in reference to the early pilgrimages to Jerusalem.
