Symbolism > spur

spur

A crest or coat of arms with the device of a spur on it was awarded to men who had done magnificent deeds. The spur could appear more ornate if it was winged, or the simpler device of a spur-rowel or spur-revel might be used. They are more often termed ‘mullets of five points pierced,’ which translates to five pointed stars with a hole in the center, or the part of the spur used to actually cut the horse. This was a dangerous implement, used by knights to stimulate their war-horses into action. It signifies preparedness for active service.
