Symbolism > patriarchal cross

patriarchal cross

The patriarchal cross has two horizontal bars instead of one, with the second one being much longer than the first, and approximately half way down the length of the vertical bar. It is said that this cross was born by the ancient Patriarchs of Jerusalem and afterwards by the Patriarch of Constantinople; however, there is not much historical evidence to back up this legend. The patriarchal cross was not observed in the rolls until after the fifteenth century.
