A war mace is a heavy, spiked metal club used to smash armor and helmets. An even deadlier version of the mace, the morning star is also often depicted and shares the symbolic meaning of the mace. The morning star consists of a spiked, spherical head cast in one piece and held to a handle by a length of chain. The mace signifies defense and readiness for battle. When used ceremonially, the mace stands for authority.
