Symbolism > harpy

harpy

In Greek mythology, the harpy was the spirit of the wind, particularly the hurricane. It is represented by a virgin's face, neck, and breast, the body of a lion and the wings and talons of a vulture or an eagle. The harpy is a symbol of ferocity under provocation. It is particularly found in German heraldry, though it can also be found elsewhere, and the German name for it is jungfraunadler.
