gouttes
Gouttes are intended to represent drops with various different symbolic meanings depending on the color. They are drawn in an elongated tear shape with wavy sides. They are seldom used singly and the number on the shield is usually specified. They can also be referred to as gouttees, or guttees, as well. The gouttee d'or represents drops of gold, and may signify the wealth of the bearer, or perhaps his generosity. Gouttee d'eau, or silver drops, indicates water. Gouttee de larmes refers to blue drops, representing tears, signifying sorrow. Gouttee de sang means drops of blood, and signifies the bloodshed in battle. Gouttee de poix means black drops of pitch. Boiling pitch was often poured down on the assailants of castles. The symbol probably represented either bravery in the face of such a defense, or the skill required in doing it. Gouttee d'huile means green drops representing oil, and signifying religious blessing.Copyright © 2000 - 2009 Swyrich Corporation, all rights reserved
