Symbolism > flaunches

flaunches

Flaunches are segments of a circle with a large diameter, hat project into the field from either side of the shield. They are a different color than the field and are referred to by the various names of flanches, flanks or flanques. They are always borne in pairs. Flaunches were granted by sovereigns as a reward for virtue and learning, especially for services as an ambassador. Flasques are the diminutives of flaunches and do not project as far into the shield. Vioders are even smaller and are incapable of bearing a charge. Square flaunches are drawn like two projecting triangles. The term in the flank, or in the flaunch, is used to signify at the side.
