cross formee

The cross formee is a square cross with arms that spread steeply out from a small, square center, and then are sheared off abruptly, as though they have hit the sides of a box. This is the form of the Victoria Cross, the highest British military award for valor. Also called the cross patee, or the cross patty, this device stands for dedication and immortality. The cross patee fitched, the cross patee fitched at foot, and the cross patee quadrate are also common. The cross patee fitched is drawn with the bottom arm of the cross replaced by an elongated point like a spike, and when it is fitched at foot the spike simply originates out of the bottom of the lower arm. The cross patee quadrate looks like it has had a much larger square placed over the center but only its profile can be seen.
