coronet

The coronet, such as the ducal coronet, is used for decoration only and does not denote rank, although it is often mistakenly assumed that the bearer of the coronet was of royal lineage. The coronet is a sign of victory, empire, and sovereignty. Now the word coronet is generally synonomous with crown.
